One of Kazakhstan’s two major ports, Atyrau sits at the moutn of the Ural River on the Caspian Sea, with Europe on one side and Asia on the other. A major oil and gas center, Atyrau attacts workers from other regions, including Karakalpakstan is a semi-autonomous region within Uzbekistan. The Karakalpak people are more closely related to the Kazakhs than Uzbeks.ion.
