Field partners have been on the ground, partnering with others to provide relief.
In March 2023, Cyclone Freddy, the strongest and longest lasting tropical cyclone ever recorded, hit Malawi and Mozambique for a second time, causing massive flooding and devastation, killing over 800 (over 500 in Malawi) and displacing over 500,000. The cyclone came following a major cholera outbreak. Blantyre, in southern Malawi, where several local (Malawian) GT field partners live, was the center of the devastation.
While GT is not a disaster relief organization, have already sent funding in response to those affected by Cyclone Freddy, including support to several of our Malawian field partners whose homes were severely damaged. We have been working with other organizations, helping to provide on-the-ground assistance to communities in Southern Malawi.
North American field partners Luke and Jamie Ulrich, who live in Lilongwe, north of the affected area, have shared photos and video footage of the destruction taken by those living in the hardest hit area.
