I am a cradle Episcopalian and life long Christian. The Lord led me into
missions while attending university. After graduating, I served in then
Zaire, now Democratic Republic of Congo, with Wycliffe Bible Translators. I
returned to the States on home leave in order to finish my Masters at
seminary. While there, the two civil wars erupted in Zaire, and the Lord led
me out of Wycliffe and into a time of waiting on His direction.
I finished my degree and stayed, working in the Business Office of the
seminary for another 3 years while waiting on the Lord. I had met Rt Rev
John Rucyahana (Bishop of Shyira Diocese in Rwanda) when we had both been at
the seminary in 1988-89. I had continued to keep in touch with him on his
frequent visits to the States. On one visit, I asked him what opportunities
were available in Rwanda for me. We began to explore the various
opportunities and eventually the Lord made it clear that I was to come and
serve in his diocese.
The church in Rwanda is in need of education at all levels. One of these
is basic literacy for adults, many of whom never had the opportunity to
attend primary school. Then there is the need to help the Christians grow in
their faith, deepening their understanding of who Jesus is and who they are
in Him. At a recent session of the leadership of the diocese, they indicated
their three most important goals, and one of these is the fight against
ignorance. What I am called to do fits under this category. I coordinate the
Adult Literacy Program for the diocese, helping the catechists and local
literacy teachers get the training and materials they need to help their
people learn to read and write. The second area where I work is alongside
the existing women's programs, to help them explore ways to study Scripture
and grow in their faith where basic education doesn't exist.
So we want to educate them in the area of literacy as well as their walk with the Lord.
These two programs will feed into each other.
